Italian Alps, Stelvio Pass and Milan

Time has been passing by and we couldn’t resist itch for another trip. Because we didn’t have a lot of time, we narrowed down to north of Italy for two reasons.

  1. New country 🙂
  2. We preferred being in mountains this time.

So, North of Italy seemed a good option. As usual, packed our bags and left our home on a Sunday morning. Took several stops and breaks though out Netherlands, Germany & Liechtenstein before hitting the Alps. I think this article is more of a photolog than anything else! Hope you will enjoy.

After several hours of cruising in our Golf Wagon, we started getting a glimpse of Alps.

Several stops followed. Photos, lots of fresh air and tons of berries followed.

Not to forget, there were some beautiful lakes too.

After a couple of hours, we realized we were nearing the world famous Stelvio pass.

Wikipedia says: The Stelvio Pass (Italian: Passo dello Stelvio is a mountain pass in northern Italy bordering Switzerland at an elevation of 2,757 m (9,045 ft) above sea level. It is the highest paved mountain pass in the Eastern Alps, and the second highest in the Alps, 7 m (23 ft) below France’s Col de l’Iseran (2,764 m (9,068 ft)).

Location: The pass is located in the Ortler Alps in Italy between Stilfs (Italian: Stelvio) in South Tyrol to the north-east and Bormio to the south-west in the province of Sondrio. It lies right at the border of Switzerland and is connected to Sta. Maria Val Müstair in the north by the Umbrail Pass on Stelvio’s western ramp. The “Three Languages Peak” (Dreisprachenspitze) above the pass is so named because this is where the Italian, German, and Romansh language-speaking areas meet.

We kept stopping and driving, enjoying every moment.

Another few hours into the drive, we reached out AirBnb for next couple of days.

It was an old mountain side house, very charming to say the least.

Not just walls, the roof is also made of stones.

The perfect spot for a few days if you are looking for getting away from the busy city life.

It was fairly warm and sunny. The village, though had only very basic facilities, never disappointed when it comes to nature.

We could even see Lake Como at a distance.

To be honest, This wasnt a site seeing trip, rather it was more of time to relax and to enjoy some nature. So all we did was that we spent few more days all around the small village mountains.

We also witnessed something interesting. This helicopter was constantly going back and forth seen across the mountains from the balcony and we were curious. Our owner explained that its building materials getting delivered to high Alps and that seemed a normal thing for the locals to do!

Anyhow, as we were getting closer to returning to Netherlands, we had to make a short visit to Milan as we came that close to the city anyway.

Couple of hours walking around the city, a good dinner and one night later, we headed home next day. Return drive was all about cruising all the miles across Italy, Swiss, Germany and Netherlands!

Thanks,

Dileep
